As part of my preparation to my first multi-day bike ride, San Francisco To Los Angeles over Pacific Highway 1. I wanted to be as light as possible so decided to pack 7 days worth of gel that I can eat while riding each day.

There was only way to do so, and that was to cook my own gel at home!

Here is the recipe is used. I multiplied this by 7 to get a full week worth of sugar & carbs throughout my week.

Energy gel/pouch (4 servings)

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons chia seeds.
  • 2 teaspoons honey.
  • 1 tablet of electrolytes.
  • 1 tablet of Ginseng.
  • 1 scoop of pre-workout.
  • Pinch of sea-salt.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil.
  • 1.5 teaspoons Pectin.
  • 1/4 cup of water.

Directions

  1. Mix the Chia seeds with water in a cup.
  2. Add the Ginseng & electrolytes tablets and mix with a spoon until mixed.
  3. Prepare a small pan, and add coconut oil on medium temperature.
  4. Empty the content of the cup in the pan.
  5. Add honey, pre-workout, sea-salt and mix all together.
  6. Before content gets into boiling state, add the Pectin. Pectin is used to create that Jelly state.
  7. Boil for 5 mins, and keep steering.
  8. Let it rest in room temperature. By now the mixture should be pretty thick.

Note: Pouch is 4 servings (consume every 45 mins) once a day.

I used this reusable 150 ML flask/pouch from Amazon which is pretty cool. Here is the link.
